In the last 24hours, Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc across our communities, leaving destruction, heartbreak, and loss in its wake. Homes have been destroyed and families displaced. Here at Pelle Naturale HQ, as we grapple with the devastation, we find ourselves asking, "Why, Lord?" How can we reconcile the damage around us with our belief in a good and loving God?
It is in times like these that our faith is truly tested. The storm seems relentless, the skies dark, and the future uncertain. Yet, even in the midst of the most violent storm, we are reminded of God's sovereignty, His love, and His power to restore and heal.
God's Presence in the Storm
When the winds howl and the waters rise, we can take comfort in the truth that God is with us. As Psalm 46:1-2 reminds us, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way, and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea." In chaos, we are not abandoned. He is our refuge, our solid rock when everything around us feels like sinking sand.
Jesus Himself knew the power of the storm. In Matthew 8:23-27, we read how Jesus and His disciples were caught in a furious storm while crossing the Sea of Galilee. As the disciples feared for their lives, Jesus stood up and rebuked the wind and waves, saying, "Peace, be still!" (Mark 4:39). Instantly, the storm calmed. This miracle reminds us that no storm—whether physical or emotional—is beyond the reach of God's power. Even as Hurricane Helene leaves behind devastation, God's peace can calm the storms in our hearts.
Call to Compassion and Prayer
In the aftermath of this hurricane, we are called as followers of Christ to extend compassion to those affected. The apostle Paul encourages us in Galatians 6:2 to, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." As communities we will come together to rebuild, and it is essential that we embody Christ’s love by caring for the homeless, the grieving, and the weary. Whether through prayer, donating to relief efforts, offering a listening ear, or providing shelter to those in need, each act of kindness is a reflection of God’s heart for His people.
Let us also not forget the power of prayer. James 5:16 tells us that, "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." Though we may feel helpless against nature's fury, our prayers reach the throne of God. We can pray for strength for those affected, for protection over those still in harm’s way, and for the healing and restoration of communities devastated by the storm. When we lift our voices together in prayer, we join forces with the One who is able to do "immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20).
A Hope That Endures
Though the destruction of Hurricane Helene is immense, our hope in Christ remains unshaken. Romans 8:28 assures us that "in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Even when we do not understand why disasters occur, we trust that God can bring beauty from the ashes. The broken homes will be rebuilt, and the broken hearts will be mended, for our God is a God of restoration. He promises in Revelation 21:4 that one day, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
As we face the aftermath of this storm, let us hold fast to the truth that God is with us, He loves us, and He will never forsake us. His presence is the anchor for our souls in times of trouble. And as we walk through the valley of devastation, we can cling to His promise in Isaiah 43:2: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you."
May we, as the body of Christ, rise up in faith, love, and action, bringing hope to those in despair and light to those in darkness. In the midst of the storm, let us proclaim with confidence, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want" (Psalm 23:1). God will guide us through, and by His grace, we will see restoration beyond what we can imagine.
